These resources accompany my 27 Jan 2026 History Cherokee “Hear! Hear!” lecture about the 1832 Georgia Land and Gold Lotteries. But you’ll probably find them useful even if you weren’t able to attend!

Land Lottery Information

  1. Land Lottery Records at the Georgia Archives – includes information and eligibility requirements for all 8 lotteries
  2. District Plats of Survey – Plat maps made from original 1831 surveys of Cherokee territory; this is where you can find out what types of trees were on your land, including chestnuts!
  3. District Survey Field Notebooks – Actual surveyors’ notebooks for the various land lotteries

  1. Georgia Land Lots and Militia Districts at ArcGIS
  2. Cherokee County Georgia GIS (choose “GIS Online Map”) then toggle on “Land Lots” on the side bar
